The secret to 4turf® exceptionalism lies in its genetic makeup. Most turf-type perennial ryegrasses are diploid, meaning they have two sets of chromosomes in each cell. 4turf® varieties, on the other hand, are tetraploid and have four chromosomes per cell. Doubling the number of chromosomes in each cell increases the number of genes available. Furthermore, tetraploid cells tend to be larger and contain more chloroplasts, which leads to greater chlorophyll production and a more nutrient-efficient plant with a deeper, larger root mass that collects and stores more energy.
