Eagle Scout Project Restores Native Habitat with Help from La Crosse Seed
When Eagle Scout candidate Westen Schabler set out to make a difference in his community, he chose a challenge that would leave a lasting impact: restoring a ¼-acre section of Cool Creek Park in Carmel, Indiana. The area had become overrun with invasive honeysuckle, blocking views of the creek and crowding out native plants. Westen’s goal was to clear the invasive species and replant the site with native seeds – creating a healthier, more vibrant habitat for both visitors and wildlife.
To make this vision a reality, Westen partnered with Hamilton County Parks, where Park Naturalist Zach McNulty helped identify the right seed mix for the site. After reaching out to several suppliers, Westen chose La Crosse Seed, a DLF Division, because, in his words, “they were very responsive, had the correct seed mix, and were eager to support me in my most important project.”
Our team proudly supplied the custom Upland Woodland Seed Mix used for the project, with Joe Kelich and Melissa Oldenburg leading the effort. They partnered with Rose Kelly of Rosie’s Gardens & Hughes Landscape, who generously contributed to the seed cost, and worked with the La Crosse Seed team to cover the remainder. This collaboration ensured Westen had everything he needed to succeed.
The project was more than planting seeds; it was about building skills, fostering teamwork, and helping nature thrive. Westen shared that he learned valuable skills like communication, planning, time management, and coordinating volunteers. His favorite part? Returning a year later to see the area still clear of honeysuckle, with native plants thriving and flowers in bloom.
Troop 112, which frequently visits Cool Creek Park, now enjoys a revitalized space where visitors can once again see and appreciate the creek. Thanks to Westen’s leadership and the combined efforts of local partners and our team, this project reflects how collaboration and shared purpose can create lasting impact – connecting people, ideas and resources to help communities thrive.
