Wall-to-wall DLF grass at The Players Championship

DLF's impossibly green grass is in the spotlight again this week as the best professional golfers in the world compete for The Player's Championship at the TPC Sawgrass Stadium Course in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida.

TPC Sawgrass is the headquarters of the PGA Tour and has hosted the tournament each year since 1982.  Five years ago, the PGA Tour shifted the timing of the tournament from May to March, which led to a change in agronomic strategy as the course's perennial warm-season grasses (mostly bermudagrass) are dormant during the winter and need nighttime temperatures to remain above 60 degrees Fahrenheit (15 degrees Celsius) for several days in a row before they will green up and start producing new shoots.

The agronomy team must have grass that's actively growing in order to create championship-level playing surfaces, and since the bermudagrass is still asleep in March, they now overseed the entire course with cool-season varieties supplied by DLF.

The process starts in the fall when they close the golf course for five days to plant the seed. Then the team meticuously grows in the different areas of the property over several months. This year, DLF's Maximum Poa Trivialis was planted on the greens and Champion Fine Perennial Ryegrass & Chewings Fescue Mixture on the tees, fairways and roughs. They also added extra SR5130 Chewings Fescue to the shaded areas, Sabre 3 Poa Trivialis to the approaches and green surrounds, and TransAm Intermediate Ryegrass for general landscaping needs.

An emerald carpet of natural grass now awaits 144 professional golfers and millions of viewers around the world.  Sit back and enjoy the view!
