Schizachyrium scoparium

Little Bluestem

Little Bluestem

Little Bluestem is a native perennial grass commonly used for pasture, hay, and in prairie restoration projects. Known for its early growth, it provides high-quality forage for cattle and horses, especially when grazed or hayed before the seed stem elongates. While it is too coarse for sheep and goats, it remains a reliable forage source for other livestock. Little Bluestem thrives in a variety of soils but is not well-suited to wet conditions. Though it produces lower yields and nutrition compared to grasses like sand bluestem and crested wheatgrass, its production remains stable year after year, except in cases of severe drought.

This drought-tolerant grass excels in creating stable ecosystems, offering valuable forage during early growth stages while being an important species in prairie restoration efforts.
