Green Needlegrass

Green Needlegrass

Green Needlegrass is a cool-season, native perennial bunchgrass well-suited for range seeding, critical area establishment, mineland revegetation, and wildlife habitat creation. Commonly found in the Northern Great Plains and extending as far south as Arizona, it thrives in medium to fine-textured soils. Green Needlegrass is valued for its high nutritional quality and palatability for wildlife, though it may decrease under heavy grazing pressure. Unlike other needlegrasses, its awns are less problematic for livestock.

This grass is an important species in mixed midgrass seedings, contributing to the establishment of diverse native vegetation. While it may have a slow germination rate due to its hard seed coat, once established, Green Needlegrass is highly resistant to disease and offers long-term ecological benefits.
