Forestburg Switchgrass
Switchgrass is a warm-season perennial grass native to much of the United States, widely used for both pasture grazing and hay production. It provides high-quality forage, especially when grazed before seedheads develop, typically when the grass reaches 8 to 10 inches tall, in late May or early June. This makes it an excellent choice for grazing animals during its early growth stages, as it is highly palatable and nutritious. It also serves as a good hay source, particularly for weaning calves or growing young stock. However, as the plants mature, the hay becomes less desirable for livestock.
With its high yields and environmental adaptability, Switchgrass is not only a valuable forage grass but also a promising biofuel feedstock, making it an excellent option for sustainable agriculture. While beneficial for many livestock species, it is important to note that Switchgrass can be toxic to horses, sheep, and goats.
